Mongo Bendugu, April 23, 2024 – In a significant stride towards sustainable local development, the Falaba District Council proudly commissioned a series of European Union (EU) investment projects today at the newly constructed multi-purpose hall in Mongo Bendugu.
The EU’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s socio-economic transformation post-civil war has been exemplified through its substantial investment in human capital, economic, and social infrastructure. The projects, which have been underway since November 2018, reached a pivotal milestone today as they were officially inaugurated in the presence of local dignitaries, community members, and EU representatives.
The investment projects, which are part of the EU’s Support to Civil Society and Local Authorities for local development in Sierra Leone Programme, aim to promote economic growth, capacity building, and social equality for Sierra Leoneans in rural areas. The EU has been a steadfast partner in the district’s journey towards development, providing funding through the District Council and local civil society organizations to build connections, empower citizens, and enhance access to economic opportunities especially for marginalized groups since March 2023.
Among the commissioned projects is the multi-purpose hall itself, a testament to the EU’s focus on creating facilities that encourage human capital growth, with special emphasis on women and young adults. The hall is expected to serve as a hub for various community activities, educational programs, and social events, fostering a sense of unity and progress within the district.
The EU has also funded the construction of twenty four (24) markets stores with water and sanitation facilities, the construction of two (2) grain stores and drying floor with a milling machine and the rehabilitation of feeder roads and bridges. These infrastructural developments are crucial in improving transportation, opportunity, health, and safety essential foundations for future development.
The commissioning ceremony was marked by speeches that highlighted the collaborative efforts of the EU and the Falaba District Council. The EU Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Amb. Muller emphasized the grant’s role in empowering the district council to implement development initiatives effectively. The Chairman of the Falaba District Council, Ibrahim Sorie Sesay, expressed gratitude for the EU’s support, which he believes will unlock the socio-economic potential of the district. The Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs Amb. Tamba Lamina described the accusation as a milestone for the people of Falaba. He expressed his delight in the hard work of the Council and by extension the core staff.
As the projects move from the commissioning phase to active utilization, the people of Falaba District look forward to reaping the benefits of these investments. The EU’s support is not just a financial contribution but a partnership that resonates with the core objectives of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aiming to leave no one behind.
