The main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning remarks made by Jimmy Batilo Songa, the newly elected Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), describing them as a direct threat to democratic governance and the neutrality of state institutions.

In a press release titled “Statement on Threats to Democratic Governance and the Neutrality of State Institutions,” the APC expressed deep concern over Songa’s alleged call during his acceptance speech for the President, the Army, Soldiers, and Marshals to “stop the APC in 2028.” The opposition party claims this statement signals an intent to use state security forces to suppress political opposition ahead of the next general elections.

“This is not just a political misstep, it is a dangerous precedent that undermines the democratic values enshrined in our Constitution,” said the APC Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh. “We call on all democratic forces, civil society organizations, and the international community to take note of this troubling development.”, he said.

The SLPP has since responded, categorically rejecting the APC’s interpretation of Chairman Songa’s remarks. In their rebuttal, the ruling party accused the APC of deliberately misrepresenting the speech to incite fear and confusion among the public.

“Chairman Songa’s remarks were taken out of context and do not reflect any call for the politicization of our security forces.”

It will be recalled that, recently, another senior member of the SLPP, Chief Kebi, also threatened that he would bring war if the opposition wins the 2028 elections.

Since the SLPP came to power in 2018, its party leadership and supporters have perpetrated a lot of violence against members and supporters of the opposition APC, which has led to many fleeing into exile.

Political analysts say the exchange underscores growing tensions between Sierra Leone’s two dominant parties as the country inches closer to the 2028 elections. The APC has called for calm and urged all parties to recommit to democratic principles and the rule of law.

As the political climate heats up, observers are watching closely to see whether this war of words will escalate or prompt renewed dialogue between the parties.
