A Tragedy had struck in Makeni during the ongoing recruitment exercise for enlistment into the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) when an applicant, identified as Jamil Mohamed Kamara, a graduate collapsed and later died after attempting to complete a 2.5-kilometer endurance run.

The incident occurred at the 4th Infantry Brigade in Makeni, where Kamara was undergoing the basic physical fitness assessment test. Reports indicate that he failed to complete the run, subsequently developed a medical emergency, and was later pronounced dead despite efforts to save his life.

This unfortunate event has drawn somber reflection, as it comes on the heels of a similar tragedy during the last recruitment exercise. On that occasion, a cadet applicant, Suliaman Marah, a journalist working for Hope FM, also collapsed and died while participating in the physical fitness test.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on Kamara’s death, but repeated incidents have raised concerns about the safety protocols and medical preparedness during the rigorous recruitment process.

The RSLAF recruitment exercise, which is designed to test endurance, discipline, and physical readiness, remains a critical gateway for aspiring soldiers. However, the recent fatalities have sparked calls for enhanced medical screening and emergency response measures to prevent further loss of life.
