Sierra Leone’s fragile democracy is once again being tested amid rising tensions between the country’s two dominant political parties — the All People’s Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

Many citizens argue that the deepening political rivalry is threatening progress on urgent national priorities and slowing the pace of development.

Political observers have warned that the ongoing disagreements between the APC and SLPP risk paralyzing governance, leaving ordinary Sierra Leoneans to bear the burden of the stalemate. With pressing challenges such as economic recovery, youth unemployment, healthcare delivery, and infrastructure development, many believe the nation cannot afford to be held hostage by partisan disputes.

Across the country, calls for dialogue and compromise continue to grow, with citizens stressing that Sierra Leone’s future must not be sacrificed for political brinkmanship.

“Sierra Leone belongs to all of us, not to one party or the other,” one civil society activist said. “Our leaders must rise above division and put the people first.”

Analysts note that while political competition remains a vital pillar of democracy, prolonged deadlock undermines public confidence and risks weakening state institutions. The demand for unity is becoming louder, with many citizens urging both the APC and SLPP to place national interest above party loyalty.

As Sierra Leone looks ahead, the key question remains whether its leaders will choose cooperation over confrontation. What is clear, however, is that the country’s progress depends on moving beyond partisan battles and focusing on the collective good.
