The Government has released US$1.7 million to support the national response to Mpox, but funding for Ebola preparedness has yet to be secured, according to the National Public Health Agency (NPHA).

The agency disclosed that the funds have been specifically allocated for Mpox containment activities, including disease surveillance, laboratory testing, case management, and public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing further spread of the virus.

Despite the allocation for Mpox response, NPHA officials revealed that efforts are ongoing to mobilize resources for Ebola preparedness measures, even though no Ebola outbreak has been reported in the country.

Key preparedness activities identified by the agency include the procurement and stockpiling of personal protective equipment, training of frontline healthcare workers, and strengthening disease surveillance and border screening systems.

“Ebola preparedness is not waiting for an outbreak. We’re pushing for funds now so we don’t get caught off guard,” the agency’s communications lead stated.

The NPHA emphasized that no Ebola cases have been confirmed in the country and assured the public that response mechanisms remain on standby should the need arise.

The agency added that it continues to engage development partners and stakeholders to secure the necessary support to strengthen the country’s readiness against potential Ebola threats while maintaining ongoing Mpox response efforts.
