In a political landscape often defined by noise and rivalry, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has carved a distinct reputation as a humble servant, a technocrat, loyalist and bridge-builder whose quiet work ethic powers some of Sierra Leone’s most critical reforms.
Sworn in on April 4, 2018 and reaffirmed for a second term on June 29, 2023, Dr. Jalloh has remained President Julius Maada Bio’s most dependable ally. At his second swearing-in, he pledged to serve “with utmost dedication” as the President implements his manifesto. President Bio himself has described him as a dependable ally and a fitting embodiment of loyalty and consistency.
That humility is rooted in an uncommon journey.
Born in Koidu in 1970, Jalloh is not a career populist. He holds a B.A. from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, an http://M.Sc. in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, and a Ph.D. from the University of Bordeaux in France. He served as West Africa Analyst for the International Crisis Group, as Senior Adviser for the UN Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), and as Sahel Adviser to the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel.
Yet despite nearly two decades in elite international diplomacy, colleagues describe him as deeply accessible and grounded.
“He came into this position with vast governance experience from several nations,” observers note in his own reflection on service. That experience has shaped a servant-leadership style focused not on personal limelight, but on delivery.
His fingerprints are on some of the Bio administration’s most transformative but least politicized work:
He played a central role in negotiating Sierra Leone’s acceptance into the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), resulting in a $480 million compact to transform the energy sector. He provides oversight of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), ensuring transparency in natural resource governance, and was entrusted to lead the National Elections Review Committee to enhance the work of elections management bodies.
During his first term, he championed efforts to strengthen healthcare systems, improve infrastructure, and expand educational opportunities and scholarships for youth.
In Freetown markets and in Kono, his home district, residents often remark on the same trait: he listens. He does not command the stage with fiery rhetoric. He convenes, he consults, and he follows through. Former colleagues at Crisis Group remembered him for “his incomparable network of contacts in West Africa, his knowledge and understanding of the political dynamics of the region and his charisma”, but in Sierra Leone today, his charisma is measured in humility. fdad

At a time when the power of the Vice President depends largely on the role delegated by the President, Dr. Jalloh has redefined the office not through constitutional ambition, but through faithful service, technical competence, and quiet loyalty.
For many Sierra Leoneans, that is the very definition of a humble servant leader who returned home from the world stage not to be served, but to serve.
