The main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) party in Sierra Leone has over the weekend (18-20 February, 2023) elected Dr Samura Matthew Wilson Kamara as flag bearer to contest the 2023 presidential polls slated for June 24. The election took place at the party’s headquarters in the northern city of Makeni after an angst court ruling on Friday 17th February, to hold or not to hold a National Delegate Conference (NDC).Other national executive officers including Chairman and deputy, National Secretary General and deputy, National Publicity Secretary and deputy, Financial Secretary, Treasurer and National Advisory Committee members amongst others were elected during the process. It could be recalled that the part was embattled with a controversial injunction issued against the ITGC not to hold the National Delegate Conference on 17, 18 and 19 February, setting aside an initial rulingby the same court demanding the party to go ahead with the NDC as slated earlier. After a revisit of the injunction, the party was granted to hold its NDC on 18, 19 and 20 February. The election of the flag bearer and other national executive members was followed by a ground breaking return to Freetown by Dr Samura Kamara and team. An occasion that was characterised by a mammoth crowd of party supporters glared in red, who took to the streets of Freetown on Wednesday to welcome their leader.Political commentators say Wednesday’s crowd is the largest in the political history of Sierra Leone. Addressing the crowd of supporters at the party’s office at Brookfields in Freetown, Dr Samura said he is determined to win the 2023 polls, to salvage the country from whathe referred to as “Economic down trend”. Other stakeholders of the party expressed same sentiment and urged their supporters to remain calm and law abiding.
