CIVIL RIGHT ACTIVIST GONE MISSING

Civil Rights activist Umaru Billie Daramy, age 41 is reported to have gone missing since July 17th 2020 Makeni generator protest.
Umaru Billie Daramy stands accused as one of the organisers of the protest who mobilised thousands of protesters to the street to demand their generator which led to clashes between the protesters and security forces leading to the death of six people.
Umaru Billie Daramy one of the organisers of the protest is being hunted for trial for what Sierra Leone authorities referred to as an incitement to protest.
The protesters who took to the street were simply exercising their right to protest which came following a report that the Minister of Energy and Power, Alhaji Kanja Sesay has instructed to relocate an electricity-generating power plant from Makeni in the northern part of Sierra Leone, to the Lungi International Airport
In a bid to stop the transfer, fearing it would jeopardize the electricity supply in Makeni, Umaru Billie Daramy and a few civil rights activists mobilised hundreds of people who took to the streets and set up barricades.
In response, police officers opened fire on protesters which led to the death of six (6) persons and left scores injured, 56 people were arrested including school kids, 43 were later released, and 13 were imprisoned.


Umaru Billie Daramy is reported to have fled the country in fear of his life and prosecution by authorities which is believed to be politically motivated as those arrested and detained have been subjected to torture, and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment as the government as described their action as sabotage aim to undermined the government.
The Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) a pan–African non-governmental organization based in The Gambia and working to promote human rights in Africa and improve the effectiveness of African Human Rights has also condemned the authorities in Sierra Leone for lack of respect for fundamental human rights of its citizens.
