President Dr. Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. of Liberia have jointly launched a transformative 255-kilometre road project in Liberia, marking a significant step toward regional integration and economic growth in West Africa.

The initiative, structured under a Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) concession, will upgrade two major transport corridors.

The first component includes a four-lane highway from St. Paul Bridge to Klay, extending to Bo Waterside, with additional links from Klay to Tubmanburg and Madina Junction to Robertsport.

The second component is an 86-kilometre two-lane road connecting Voinjama to Mendikorma.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Bio described the project as a “historic milestone” that will reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and facilitate the free movement of people, goods, and services across borders. He said the initiative reflects a shared commitment to strengthening economic ties and improving livelihoods.

President Bio also commended President Boakai’s leadership, noting that the project demonstrates a clear commitment to partnership and regional progress. He stressed that peace and stability in both nations have created the enabling environment for such large-scale infrastructure investments, describing the project as “a dividend of peace.”

In his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bio underscored the broader regional importance of the corridor, describing it as a vital component of West Africa’s economic infrastructure.

“This is not just a road project for Liberia,” he said. “It is a regional statement that strengthens connectivity, promotes trade, and brings us closer to realizing a truly integrated West African market.”

The project is expected to boost commerce, enhance mobility, and deepen cooperation among Mano River Union countries, reinforcing a shared vision of sustainable development and economic transformation across the sub-region.
