The Sierra Leone Police have arrested 25 suspects in connection with unrest and multiple acts of arson in Kailahun District, triggered by the death of Abdulai Kallon, a commercial bike rider from Daru.

Police confirmed that Kallon, a young rider plying the Daru-Kailahun route, died as a result of mob violence. The incident ignited protests across parts of the district, with reports of property set on fire in the aftermath.

In a statement, police said the suspects were apprehended during targeted operations following investigations into the violence and destruction of property. Authorities did not release names of those detained, noting that investigations are ongoing.

“The police remain committed to maintaining law and order. We will ensure that all persons responsible for the mayhem are brought to justice,” a senior police officer told The Informant Newspaper.

Security has since been reinforced in affected areas to restore calm. District authorities and community leaders have also appealed to residents to remain peaceful and allow the law to take its course.

The death of Kallon has renewed debate over mob justice in eastern Sierra Leone. Human rights advocates are calling for public sensitization on legal procedures for addressing suspected crimes.

Police say investigations continue and further arrests have not been ruled out as they process evidence linked to both Kallon’s death and the subsequent arson.
