In Northern Sierra Leone Secret Society Scares Off Young Entrepreneurs

Report reaching the Informant media indicates that secret societies, especially the Poro society are threatening the lives of many young male entrepreneurs in northern Sierra Leone. These young people are supposed to be the lead in spanning agricultural productivity in the country.

Our investigations revealed that one Mr. Morlai Morlson Kargbo, a Sierra Leonean born of Gbendembu Town, Bombali District, northern Sierra Leone has been on the run since he was told to replace his father as head of the poro society and native doctor in his home district. Report say Kargbo ran away in January 2023, close to his initiation ceremony.

 Friends intimated this medium that Mr Kargbo had been on run when it was his turn to replace his father as head of the secret society. They said Kargbo’s father, Pa Amadu Kargbo was the head of the poro society in the community till his death in late 2022, and tradition demands that his eldest son should replace him.

The young men told the Informant that once a member of the poro society; one is dedicated to the tradition of the community by marrying many wives with a short life span due to the subscription of oath. “As a member of this society, one is averse to western education, you always controlled by evil forces”, the young men lamented.

This according to investigations scared away Mr Kargbo who is known as a relatively educated young man with entrepreneur skills.

The Poro society, according to sources is a deadly secret society in the north of the country; known for their charms and deadly initiations. Once a member, young people completely dedicate their time and energy working as secret agents of the supernatural with no visible gains. These society forcefully conscript young men, chasing them in their homes for initiation. Sometimes ago, the Government of Sierra Leone had to slam a ban on their activities through the police, but this action proved futile since the country respects African tradition. Their activities have got an effect on productivity in the country.
