The escalating prevalence of the Kush drug has triggered a severe mental health crisis in Sierra Leone, particularly among the youth population. A significant number of young individuals have fallen victim to addiction, grappling with the harmful effects of this substance. Madam Zainab Kabba has emerged as a beacon of hope in this dire situation, taking extraordinary steps to address the crisis.
One remarkable aspect of Madam Zainab Kabba’s efforts is her unwavering commitment to the Sierra Leone Psychiatric Hospital, formerly known as Kissy Mental Hospital, specifically focusing on Ward 9. The authorities have entrusted her with this space due to the instrumental role she has played in the lives of Kush victims. Every Sunday, she selflessly dedicates her time to provide nourishment and counselling to these patients who have been admitted due to the devastating impact of the Kush drug.
Madam Zainab Kabba’s motivation is deeply rooted in her conviction that it’s imperative to lead the charge against the Kush drug epidemic. She recognizes the necessity to establish safe havens where individuals struggling with addiction can freely express themselves while undergoing the challenging journey of recovery. Her passion and determination are palpable as she empowers these patients, instilling in them the strength to battle their cravings and desires for Kush.
In her visits to the facility, I together with a brother had the privilege to accompany Madam Zainab Kabba, witnessing firsthand her dedication to this cause. While she prefers to keep her efforts discreet, I felt compelled to shed light on the safe space she has created. By sharing her compassionate actions, I hope it will inspire others in Sierra Leone to recognize the urgency of this crisis and take action.
Madam Zainab Kabba’s impact extends far beyond mere counselling. She radiates positivity and encouragement, becoming a beacon of hope for the Kush victims. Her words of motivation uplift their spirits, reminding them that they are not societal burdens. She firmly believes that if they choose to make a “U-turn,” they possess the potential to become professionals like lawyers and doctors, illustrating the transformative power of recovery and redemption.
In the face of adversity, Madam Zainab Kabba’s actions truly reflect her as a blessing to Sierra Leone. Her tireless dedication, her creation of safe spaces, and her unwavering support for those in need set a remarkable example for the entire nation. As her acts of kindness come to light, it is my hope that her compassion will ignite a collective effort to address this crisis with the urgency it deserves.
