The Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, has pledged full backing for officers and residents of Kailahun District, vowing to rest,ore confidence and boost security operations in the wake of the arson attack that destroyed the Kailahun Police Barracks.
IGP Sellu arrived in Kailahun on Friday immediately after attending the two-day National Council of Paramount Chiefs Conference in Bo City.
He toured the charred remains of the barracks to assess the damage before holding separate meetings with police personnel and community leaders.
Addressing officers at the scene, the IGP urged them to remain professional and resilient despite the setback.
“Your work matters, and you have the full support of the Sierra Leone Police leadership,” Sellu said. “We will strengthen your operational capacity so you can continue to serve and protect this district.”
In a meeting with chiefs, youth leaders and residents, Sellu stressed that lasting security depends on trust between the police and the public. He called for unity and closer cooperation to prevent further attacks and to keep peace across the district.
Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Eastern Region, ACP Joe Kamanda-Bongay, who accompanied the IGP, echoed the call. He appealed to community members to share information and stand with law enforcement.
“Peace is not built by police alone,” Kamanda-Bongay said. “It is built when police and community work as one.”community representatives welcomed the visit and praised the police for engaging directly during a difficult period. They pledged to continue supporting security initiatives and development programs in Kailahun.
The IGP’s visit signals the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to rebuilding the barracks, reinforcing community policing, and ensuring that those responsible for the arson are brought to justice.
