As part of President Julius Maada Bio’s Feed Salone program aimed at empowering local farmers and modernizing agriculture in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the National Farmers Federation of Sierra Leone (NFFSL), has extended support to farmers in Falaba District.

The Ministry and NFFSL distributed modern farming machines and fertilizers to farmers across the Falaba District. The event attracted many local farmers, excited about the promise of modernizing their farming techniques. Speaking at the distribution ceremony, Madam Feremusu Turay, District Coordinator of the NFFSL, expressed the significance of this initiative for local agriculture.

He described the day as remarkable for the farmers in Falaba District pointing out that “We are distributing essential farming machines and fertilizers that will help boost agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of our farmers,” Madam Turay stated. She emphasized that the provision of these modern tools is key to increasing crop production, particularly rice, and vegetables, which are in high demand across the country.

She revealed that the initiative was launched in September and aims to promote agricultural productivity and improve the standard of living for local farmers. She pointed out that the distribution covers all 13 chiefdoms in Falaba District, ensuring that the resources reach a broad number of farmers stressing that the introduction of modern farm equipment will significantly enhance agricultural productivity, contributing to Sierra Leone’s long-term goal of food security.

“As the farmers embrace these new resources, we are confident that production levels will increase, and the district will experience growth in food availability,” she said.

Falaba District Agriculture Officer, Mr. Tamba Kelly highlighted the crucial role of modern technology in transforming Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through innovative methods under the “Feed Salone” agenda, which is designed to empower local farmers and promote sustainable farming practices noting that agricultural productivity is the backbone of any growing nation. He disclosed that with the government’s ‘Feed Salone’ initiative, they are committed to lobbying international partners and organizations to provide farmers with modern tools and techniques that will enhance their productivity and make them more competitive in local and international markets.

He added that Sierra Leone faces significant food security challenges, with many communities struggling to meet their basic food needs. The introduction of modern farming equipment, such as tractors and fertilizers, aims to alleviate these challenges by helping farmers produce more food efficiently.

Mr. Kelly noted that these machines would not only increase crop production but also reduce the amount of labor required, save time, and lower costs for farmers. The initiative he went on will allow farmers to cultivate larger areas of land with less effort, produce more food, and ultimately contribute to the economic growth of both the district and the country.

Both the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Farmers Federation have expressed their commitment to supporting agricultural development in Falaba District by equipping farmers with modern tools, they hope to see a transformation in farming practices, leading to increased productivity and improved livelihoods.

However, farmers in the district welcomed the initiative with great enthusiasm. Many expressed hope that the new machines and fertilizers would not only increase their crop yields but also help them meet the growing demand for food, particularly in the face of Sierra Leone’s ongoing food security challenges noting that the new technology gives hope to local farmers as with these machines and fertilizers, they can now grow more crops and better provide for their families.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the NFFSL are confident that this initiative is a significant step toward achieving food security in Sierra Leone. By modernizing farming practices and providing farmers with the tools they need, the government is making progress toward its vision of a self-sufficient and food-secure nation.

As more farmers in Falaba District and across Sierra Leone adopt these new technologies, the impact on agricultural productivity is expected to be substantial. Increased food production will not only address local food shortages but also create opportunities for farmers to participate in competitive markets, both domestically and internationally.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the National Farmers Federation have reaffirmed their dedication to working closely with farmers to ensure that Sierra Leone can achieve its agricultural and food security goals. With continued support and collaboration, the future of agriculture in Falaba District and the nation as a whole looks promising.

This initiative aligns with the government’s flagship program, “Feed Salone,” which aims to boost food production and achieve food security nationwide.
